Redefining a New Transatlantic Agenda: EU-US Economic Relations

Author: Ioana Ichim

ABSTRACT

A change of administration in the US, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its adverse financial and public health implications, the rising influence of emerging economies on the global market, authoritarian tendencies and undemocratic practices exercised by several states, the fast pace of digitalization – these are all factors that have been playing an important role on both sides of the Atlantic. These geopolitical realities of 2021 make policy makers deal with new unsettling challenges. It is fundamental to reinvent the transatlantic partnership in a way that incorporates these new geopolitical realities and dynamics of the world of today, in order to make the transatlantic project move further. Both the EU and the US are large economies and strong economic players in the global system. For this reason, the economic relations between them are crucial not just for their growth, but for the evolution of the world economy as a whole. This paper will address key policy considerations regarding the transatlantic economic agenda, pertaining to trade and investment, regulation and agreements, initiatives, disputes, and digital policy. It will propose, based on a reflective analysis of recent developments, seven policy recommendations. These will underline policy goals and strategic priorities for the EU and the US to work toward in 2021 and beyond.
